The Supreme Court’s decision allowing the late strongman Ferdinand Marcos’s burial in the Libingan ng Mga Bayani was a “conservative” choice for the high court, an analyst said on Monday.
Historian Manolo Quezon told Mornings@ANC that the SC considered two political questions in coming up with the decision on Marcos’ burial.
According to Quezon, the nine judges who voted in favor decided based on the “nitty-gritty” of the technicalities of the regulations while the five dissenting justices decided based on the question: “Is this a question that would make a mockery of our constitution, our country and our past?”
Quezon also distinguished between a state funeral and a military funeral, saying that at the heart of a state funeral is the fact that the government pays for it.
He added that the main difference lies basically on the scale of the funeral.
