I received a copy of Frank Ephraim / Escape to Manila from the University of Illinois Press today. I’ll be writing a column about it, but this early on, let me say it’s a fascinating book about the Jewish community in Manila during World War 2, particularly the Jews who found refuge from Nazi persecution in the Philippines.
I wrote a column on the subject back in 1995, which should be in the articles section.
I had a Jewish friend who worked as a staffer for a US Senator. He told me that his grandfather or something or maybe he was referring to our grandfather anyway the person he was referring to was one of those Jews saved by MLQ and he became the first Jewish mayor of a town or city in Indiana. This Jew was so grateful for what MLQ did that he became my mentor in the ways of the Hill. He even brought me to the highly secure (bullet proofed glass doors) of one Jewish lobby group to show me how the Jews played the lobby game so effectively. According to my Jewish friend MLQ showed more balls than FDR in the case of that shipload of Jews.
Salamat. 🙂
Hi. Do you know of stories about Greeks being stranded in the Philippines during the 1800s or so, and becoming Filipinos? What explains the surname of Judge Demetriou? Are those stories tall tales?
Also, i wonder whether any of these Jews became Filipino citizens.
Hi 😀
