On March 17, 1957, President Ramon Magsaysay was killed in a plane crash, the third president to die in office.
The Philippines Free Press blog traces the trajectory of Magsaysay’s career with three articles:
Ramon Magsaysay, Man of the Year, 1951
The “dictatorship” of Ramon Magsaysay, 1955
Nestor Mata’s Story, 1957 (still active today, Nestor Mata was the lone survivor of the plane crash).
The papers report 65% of Filipinos want the President out: although the Palace ignores low survey rating of GMA. As is his wont, Newsstand dissects the survey. Significant findings, if one looks at the details: there is no consensus on how the President should go; her Visayas bailiwick is shrinking; but her upper and middle class support has grown (and those in favor of the President are more cohesive than those arrayed against her).
Remember 168, the shopping mall supposedly made possible by officially-protected smuggling? News is, Smugglers’ haven raided. After fat holiday profits have been made all around, of course.
Building owner slain in Ortigas: the fellow allegedly had a run-in with Luis “Chavit” Singson some time ago.
Newsbreak Magazine finally has its own site online. Read their cover story on the events of February 23-24: Failed rebellion, focusing on the soldiers; and the story of the administration’s response, Yes to Emergency; and that of other groups in Romancing the Military; and their report on the Sunday Standoff.
The other day, in a media forum, former National Telecommunications Commission head Josie Lichauco said she’s been trying to tell the public (in vain, it seems) that Executive Order 454, which placed the NTC directly under the supervision and control of the President of the Philippines, was dangerous. She said in the past, the NTC has been under the Office of the President only nominally, which is as it should be, since the NTC is meant to be independent.
In the same forum, I was struck by what one lady said. She was from one of our tribal minorities (Aeta, I believe). Her appeal: people in Metro Manila should hold firm about exercising their right to protest peacefully. She said that only in the National Capital Region can people expect to properly exercise their rights; the control of local officials and warlords in the provinces are so thorough that any kind of dissent there is a dangerous proposition. My own reaction was to think to myself, of course. In a provincial setting, a protester does not enjoy either safety in numbers or the relative anonymity afforded by protesting in a metropolis. (Read PinoyPress’s account of the forum, complete with recordings of some of the talks; listen in particular to Vergel Santos’ analysis -indeed, it’s brilliant.)
No wonder Fr. Romeo Intengan says Davao and Compostela Valley are danger zones for the administration: as are Batangas, Palawan, the Bicol region and the Cordilleras. So much for the claim that only Metro-Manila is hostile to the President.
In Thailand, the Nation proclaims A great victory for freedom of speech. A commentary in the same paper, Hanuman’s monkeys are coming for the PM’s heart, paints the battle against Thaksin in mythic terms:
Since February 4 the black flags of Hanuman, the Monkey God, have been flying everywhere among the troops of Sondhi Limthongkul. The media tycoon has fully assumed the role of Rama’s valiant soldier, with his supporters wearing black T-shirts sporting the picture of Hanuman. As one of the five leaders of the People’s Alliance for Democracy, Sondhi has launched his campaign under the slogan “We’ll Fight for the King”. He has been calling for a royally appointed prime minister to succeed Thaksin and preside over a second round of political reform.
Thaksin has been seen as the enemy of justice, virtue and democracy. He may not like it, but in this battle he has inevitably been painted as Dasakantha, the 10-headed, 10-faced and 20-handed demon. Dasakantha is a paradoxical character. In some eyes, he is bold, ruthless and fearsome. But at other times, he is a very elegant, gentle and romantic character with a sense of humour. He has flesh. He is full of life. He is very smart and very stupid at the same time.
In the punditocracy, Mindanews columnist Patricio Diaz makes what he calls disturbing observations, including what he suggests is a concentration camp being built, and the Supreme Court’s overly-relaxed attitude towards resolving crucial cases.
Amando Doronila says the country is getting closer to being a police state.
Dan Mariano explains why media has reason to be nervous:
Going by Gonzalez’s standards, Bob Woodward, Carl Bernstein and their Washington Post bosses, were guilty of inciting to sedition and other crimes when they ran a series of investigative pieces on the Watergate break-in. The expose eventually led to the resignation of US President Richard Nixon – a precedent that probably has got Gonzalez et al nervous.
JB Baylon says the point is, people are still searching for answers.
Fel Maragay says the Big Push is on to “inform” the public on Constitutional changes the administration wants, and that there’s a schedule:
Based on its timetable, all the necessary Charter amendments should be approved before Congress adjourns in mid-June. The plebiscite will be held before the end of the year. The election of members of the unicameral parliamentary should be held in early 2007. And the officials of the new parliamentary government will be ready to assume office and function by the middle of 2007….
At the House of Representatives, De Venecia and company claim they have already solicited at least 150 signatures for the ChaCha resolution. But whether the required 195 signatures will be reached is uncertain because the minority bloc has launched its own signature campaign opposing ChaCha. De Venecia and his allies subscribe to the belief that once the 195 signatures are obtained for the resolution, the House can go it alone and it doesn’t matter anymore whether the senators will participate in the process. The senators, however, insist that the Senate and House should vote separately on the resolution as well as on every proposed amendment to the Constitution.
Clearly, the stalemate between the two chambers of Congress over ChaCha has become sharper. To put it more graphically, the administration is groping in the dark in pursuing this objective.
In the blogosphere, the Sassy Lawyer damns the media with faint praise, and proceeds to stuff everyone with a contrary opinion on the “Hello, Garci” tapes in four compartments:
Way I see it, every person who propagated those tapes by copying and disseminating is either 1) a part of the ploy; 2) a business opportunist who intended and/or actually made money from the tapes, directly or indirectly; 3) a political opportunist who sought visibility with the hope that with the downfall of one administration, he could hold a lucrative post in the next; or 4) simply and plainly gullible.
No exceptions, ladies and germs.

Babae, ka pala, Sleeping.
Pretty feisty..
Yawn.. go back to.. sleep.
Attack Mike as much as you want.
Open up his bank accounts. I would like to see him exposed if he is as corrupt as they say.
As i have said over and over if it is all there lets see it..
168 may be a follow on from the Lee investigation i don’t know.
As long as they continue not like the VRB which runs about for 3-4 months a year and says they stopped illegal VCD’s..
Same as the BSA who attacks some shops then stops there..
We are not blind but some times it is part of the operation to leave the place open to catch the others involved. Did they not suspend sack Customs officials the same day..
And what would have happened with out the evidence they had before the raid.. Randy David would have said it was an illegal search, and was hurting the Poor..
Nothing wrong with being a babae, In A Pig’s Eye.
The problem is we have ONE babae who has no honor, no shame, no humility. How could you explain that in one tiny midget (liliputan sized babae), one finds the most gargantuan of defects, lying, stealing, cheating, thick-faced, with no word of honor and with the most gigantic of ambitions: to squat in Malacanang till Kingdom come and to wield the power of Malacanang s if it is hers by Divine Right.
As Max Soliven, Gloria’s best friend in media said, like mother like daughter: SNOB (sans noblesse, sine nobilitate, without nobility, not noble), ambitious, thieving lot the whole of them…Gloria Macapagal is an exact replica of her mother. They probably thought that being SNOB was a compliment, well, it ain’t it is very parvenu; the description fits those two like a rubber glove.
Sleeping with who wrote: “Attack Mike as much as you want. Open up his bank accounts. I would like to see him exposed if he is as corrupt as they say”
Sleeping, do you think this filthy government of gma will expose the corrupt practices of Mike? why gma can’t lift a finger on Pidal’s case?
Its called the Senate Lacson has proposed a Law and not a single person in the senate “ANTI-GMA” has picked it up and decided to push it forward..
Why are they all corrupt or have something to hide?
IF they are so corrupt it would be the quickest and easiest way to get her out would be to expose everyones bank accounts and the money trails..
One Law and its all over..
But wait who will take over?
“Authority means legitimate power. Obviously, not all power is legitimate. Usurpers may exercise power, but their power is not legitimate, and so it is resisted. Tyrants assume power on the basis of force … (but) their power will always remain unstable. Public officials elected fraudulently may exercise power, but their power will eventually be challenged. Legitimacy is crucial to the system because it is precisely what assures compliance with collective decisions.” – Randy David
Cleansing should begin at the top. Corruption must be tackled from the top.
The family of this corrupt commander-in-chief legitimus must subject themselves to a proper public audit; they must explain how they amassed so much cash in no time at all. If for instance, Mikey Arroyo cannot explain how he got to stash so much cash in his bank account from 500 thousand pesos to 70 million in 4 years, he must be held accountable and punished to a minimum of 8 years or more. He must also explain where he got the money to buy all those thoroughbred horses from Australia (I know he has links with Australia through his uncle who is now Australia-based Iggy Tuason, first cousin of his Dad fatman Arroyo) and how he got to build a mansion when his pay is so little.
Don’t tell me that the Arroyos are rich – NO WAY… they were cash-strapped. They rode on a spurious claim that they were rich. NO WAY! Gloria and Mike fatman Arroyo used to live on their parents’ hand outs for quite sometime because Fatman Arroyo never had a decent job all his life. He’s always been a loser!
Fatman Arroyo’s closest cousin buddy is Butch Tuason, owner of ARMSCOR and Squibb-Bingham, gun dealers… The Arroyos hadn’t even warmed their seats in Malacanang following the Arroyo-mounted coup d’état in 2001 when Butch Tuason landed a very, very significant, lucrative contract with the PNP to supply the police with pistols even after the PNP Bids and Awards Committee had junked their earlier bid.
The Arroyos made PNP Chief Lastimoso turn over a competitor’s winning bid in favor of the erstwhile losing bid – Tuason’s. The income from PNP kept the family business which had been straggling for quite sometime afloat again.
Carlos ‘Butch’ Tuason, former Erap drinking buddy and Sports Commissioner is an American citizen (and US born); he is the quite “low-key” man in charge of keeping Fatman Arroyo company and Mike fatman’s troubleshooter in San Francisco. Tuason was the one that put Haggedorn and Fatman Arroyo together!
jeg, those are interesting questions you brought up.
Aha! Sleeping’s Luli Macapagal internet brigade duty is over…it’s past 7 pm…hehheh!
John,
Excellent find!
It shows that this Arroyo couple have been preparing for a police state since August because they knew that they’d committed a dastardly act…
65% of the mature, voting age Filipino population don’t want them (I say them because Gloria Mandaraya is not alone in this, Fatman is her clandestine operator par excellence) yet they are imposing themselves like abominable leeches on the nation – what a disgusting pair! They are suffering from a Bonnie and Clyde syndrome…
Did you read the news? Dinky and other black dressed guys in the baywalk were apprehended and brought to the police station?
Really? Why? Because they were wearing black?
Stupid police because of stupid Gloria!

The website describes The Macapagals as “Models of Integrity and Dedication to Public Service”.
I don’t mind Cong Dado being labeled as a model of some kind but for Luli’s (with her internet brigade) to say that her mother (who is DM’s daughter) is a model of integrity is friggin way off the mark and a downright lie. I mean, are they trying to convince themselves or what? They might as well say that the Kuratong Baleleng members are modern day Robin Hoods and that Garci is a saint.

Comment #51 of Ms. Anna:
Sorry Ms. Anna.
I only realized the politically incorrect sound of my comment after I had pressed “submit”.
The reaction was only meant to register my surprise.
I’ve been quite obnoxiuos (on purpose) to Sleeping..
-Something I would have been less inclined to do had I known, ante mano, that I was berating a lady.
Not to denigrate the status or worth of woman kind in any way..
I guess I was merely hearkening to default behaviors based on my upbringing, archaic and backward as that may now appear.
Re: #63, check out my post on the rise of the Macapagals during the Hispanic era-> http://villageidiotsavant.blogspot.com/2006/02/rise-of-macapagals.html
In A Pig’s Eye,
Please don’t believe that by not considering Gloria a fair game, eg. throw darts at her for being dishonorable and corrupt, is male behaviour in default, i.e., archaic or backward.
If only this woman could only dig into her own background and be as “archaic” and as “backward” as the honorobale gentleman that you are, our country wouldn’t be in the pits.
The moment she entered the political arena as a politician, she become a PERSON, neither as man nor as woman. And when she breaches the Rule of Law, steals from the coffers of the State and brings the Republic to the brink of Constitutional breakdown (as she has committed), she becomes a FAIR game…
I do hope you will continue NOT to tolerate that kind of behaviour from Gloria (or from Sleeping of the Luli Macapagal internet brigade) just because Gloria is a woman. Her sex is irrelevant – it’s her lack of honor and morality that is a FAIR GAME for one and all anti-Arroyo forces.
Even God punished Eve for breaking the Law in Eden.
The law is the law, harsh as it may be, it is the law.
Gloria must not be allowed to break the law with impunity. She should be pulled down from her pedestal squatting, tried publicly and punished accordingly.
JCastro,
Thank you for the link. Poor Enteng having to deal with a bunch of confused, half dazed policemen who probably are just blindly obeying the orders of the most confused and power drunk policewoman of all – Gloria Mandarawya, the self-styled commander in chief but illegitimus as illegitimus one could be …
I hope Enteng managed to recruit some of these policemen to the cause.
Oh most certainly, Ms. Anna.
No way we will countenance the behavior of gluemac..
It appears she is way past redemption.
Polished and mannered ways conferred on her person would be like “casting pearls to swine”.

FOR FORMER Social Welfare Secretary Corazon “Dinky†Soliman and online activist Vicente Romano, it was not quite a walk in the park. Two two were arrested by police early this evening for leading a “flash mob,†a group of about 30 people wearing black T-shirts that said, “Patalsikin na, now na.â€Â
I would really like a legal comment (calling all lawyers) as to whether those words : “patalsikin na, now na” can be considered seditious. Because there are lots of non-violent ways one can pressure (patalsikin) a public official out of office. I dread the day when you get can arrested just for expressing disappointment with your government and wished verbally that you had a different one.
My website (www.Redsherring.blogspot.com) is forbidding access to everybody including myself. I’m hoping the problem will be fixed over the weekend. Again, my apology and thanks to you Manolo, and to others who care too.
I’m waiting for Gloria’s stupid dumb face to come here – my friends and I will give her a welcome she’ll never forget!

Manila – The Philippine Star reported on March 18 2006 that ” A comprehensive plan to curb corruption was launched yesterday by the Office of the Ombudsman, which Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez said would be the “start of a unified approach in addressing corruption.” http://www.philstar.com/philstar/NEWS200603180410.htm
Ms Guttierez dubbed it as the “National Anti-Corruption Program of Action,” during yesterday’s Anti-Corruption Convergence Summit at Crowne Plaza Galleria Hotel in Ortigas Center, Pasig City.
Manila, March 18 2006 – Philstar reported Ms Merceditas Guttierez, Philippine Ombudsman saying, “The fight against corruption needs the cooperation of all. Convergence as a strategy will bring out collective strength,” Gutierrez said.
The nation is waiting with apprehension and expects Ms Guttierez to show balls. While it is widely known that Ms Guttierez ain’t got em balls hanging, it is widely believed that she’s got em somewhere hiding.
Reports from various sectors of the society expect Guttierez to include in her National Anti-Corruption Program of Action the investigation and the prosecution of the notorious band of three blood-related hooligans namely Tongressman Mike Jr Hooligan Arroyo, father First Fatman Mike Arroyo and lying uncle toad Tongressman Iggy Jose Pidal Arroyo.
If the three Arroyo hooligans are not included in her program of action, Ms Guttierez is expected to explain to the nation at a televised public hearing how she expects her plans to combat corruption on a national level to be fully effective without the three hooligans topping her plan’s list of investigative actions.
Certain sectors in society have intimated that if Guttierez fails to investigate and prosecute the three Arroyo hooligans within the next 100 days, the woman ombudman is expected to either resign promptly or to show deep remorse by doing the usual penance walking on her knees from the entrance to the altar of the Quiapo Church a hundred times in one go.
Ms Gutierrez, handpicked from a list of one, enjoys the full trust of Ms Gloria Mandaraya-Arroyo who expects the Ombudsman to forget the three Arroyo hooligans in her “National Anti-Corruption Program of Action”.

Manila, March 18 2006 – Manila Times internet editon banners “Bookie operation rakes in P9 billion”
According to the report, a local racehourse owners group “on Friday declared war war on illegal bookmaking operators, or bookies, which the group said earned an estimated P9 billion last yearâ€â€without a single centavo going to the government.”
The move has received support from town mayors and some members of Congress which surprisingly include horse afficionado Tongressman Mikey Hooligan Arroyo because of allegations in the past that Tong. Arroyo smuggled thoroughbred horses from Australia.
The young hooligan Arroyo’s alleged horse smuggling operations had been publicised widely particularly when Max Soliven wrote about them about a couple of times in his “By The Way” Philstar column.
It is however premature to suspect that that the young Arroyo hooligan is involved in illegal bookmaking operations. It is believed that there will be pressure on the Office of the Ombudsman to discover whether Tongressman Arroyo is indeed an illegal bookie joints owner or not.
Sleeping,
We can blame other people except Ate Glue like corruption in the local government. That is pointless because Ate Glue has the department to go after these crooks and put them behind bars.
It is the corruption that Ate Glue had done at the highest office that right now has no accountability because she refused to submit to senate court. She had twarted any effort to put her into accountability by bribing congress to kill the impeachment.
Why are we interested at the highest office? Because you and I are paying our taxes which unfortunately become cash machine for Ate Glue or any president who gets elected into that office.
Ate Glue had used billions of agrarian reform money into the 2004 presidential election without benefitting the farmers which is a violation of law (again this violation can only be prosecuted through impeachment). She implicitly extended protection to Bolante by having her Ombudswoman announced that Bolante is not covered by the DA investigation. Again, Ate Glue used the pork barrel in millions to kill the impeachment.
If your standard proof of corruption is having the money in ones pocket or bank deposits, then you have misunderstood all the people here.
Dodong,
Begging your pardon but we are not quite sure that Sleeping pays taxes like you and other honest citizens do…

Which country has the longest coastline?
Canada’s coastline is the world’s longest at 243,792 km or 151,485 miles (including the coastline of the country’s 52,455 islands.)
Yes Karl was incorrect but America is not the longest..
Also note how many islands Canada has..
Canada, the worlds second largest country after Russia.
Garci back what happens if he says it is an illegal wiretap then all the politicians will not be allowed to run in the next election as they have a copy of the tape and have listened to it?
He only has to admit to talking to his wife on the tape and his wife can destroy all their careers.. Can never be claimed to be of national interest…
Worried yes they could be, Lacson and his boys must really be shaking… No way he can claim imunity as he was seen in a hotel on TV handing out copies of the CD..
Before, this was possible..TODAY, IDON”T THINK SO!

I stand corrected Sleeping, thanks!
Karl,
Doesn’t matter if Sleeping is a man, woman or neuter…Sleeping has became a FAIR GAME because he/she/it (neuter) being a Gloria Arroyo-Mandaraya mouthpiece.
WHY THE BITCH MUST GO …
“Like the rest of the ABC+ECD classes, I figured we should just ignore GMA and go about our life. After all there’s no acceptable alternative on the horizon. Better the devil we know than the one we don’t, right?
“I even said she was most likely the winner in the 2004 elections. After all she has the incumbent’s advantage. She spent billions of pesos for her campaign. The P800 M fertilizer fund and P500M health insurance budgets were diverted to buy votes. Then to insure a convincing victory she topped it off with Garci. You see the little woman vowed she would get a lead of at least 1M votes over FPJ. That way, even if the Opposition cheats, she would have a buffer. Her other ambition is to get more votes than Erap, partly to thumb her nose up at him and his loyalists. Mostly so she would feel the love of the people because in truth everything she did was really for love.
“She wasn’t always a cheat and a liar. In fact there was one moment of epiphany when she actually had the decency to say she wasn’t going to run because she was a polarizing and divisive personality. Alas, the Holy Spirit left so soon. And her broken promise became yet another one of many more to come.
“Since the Hyatt 10 resigned, the dark side has completely taken over. Like the votes that she bought, she systematically bribed cronies and critics alike. When position and money didn’t work, fear and intimation was alternative mode of persuasion. Instead of capable men and women, she filled up critical government positions with loyalists whose self-interest hinged on preserving her own.
“And so she has slowly corrupted everyone and everything she touched. The military. The judiciary. The businessmen. The church. The police. If the soldiers were restless, give them a house and an increase. If media cannot be co-opted, threaten them with PP 1017. It’s actually 1081 all over again. Arrest all who speak out against her. Commies or professors, it doesn’t matter. You’re invited for questioning if you’re against her.
“Now she wants the charter changed in order to perpetuate her (in power). Using tried and tested methods she tried to use No-El to suborn Congress.
“Can you imagine the damage she can wreak till 2010 and beyond?…
“But who will replace her? Even Noli has been persuaded to remain loyally supportive. All trapos are the same. We replaced an incompetent plunderer with a diabolical one. What’s to assure us it won’t be from “the pot to the fire” again?
“And with this unanswered question we go about our own business, irritated by the inconvenience caused by street protests. Disdainful of Cory, Hyatt 10, Civil Society, and the whole sanctimonious lot for trying to get us back to the streets and pricking our conscience …
“Hold on a second. We are now questioning even the basis of democracy. Has the little despot insidiously corrupted us without our knowing it? We are actually making excuses to help her stay in power, even if we don’t really like her and we know she and her husband are corrupt beyond belief…
“Now with PP 1017, we have another reason to pay no heed to politics. After all we don’t want to be invited for questioning do we? In fact, we don’t want to be questioned any more. We have put our conscience on sleep mode.
“What is the life span of a tyrant? History will tell us that they will reign while good men do nothing. (Oh, incidentally, this is a phrase from Edmund Burke’s “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for some good men to do nothing!”) But one thing is sure: A leader who does not possess the “friendship” of the people cannot lead. Even Machiavelli knew that.
“Well, Madam, you will go down in history as the most unloved president this country ever had. Poor little President!
“I am going back to the streets and anywhere else where I can shout my disgust in the most powerful way I know how. GMA has to know that there are some Filipinos who cannot be bought or frightened!”
Amen!
